Michael Jackson's death could not have come at a worse time

Michael Jackson… was more than the odd, flawed (possibly even demented & perverted) man we saw. Michael Jackson was a symbol. His music was joy & that joy was something we all shared. It wasn’t about who he was or jokes we made about him… It was about the icon. No matter what country you live in, religion you believe in, or political party you belong to, can you deny that you’ve moonwalked? Can you deny that Billie Jean makes you wanna shake your ass?

Even with all the terrible things going on in their country, today, Iranians took time to tweet about how sad they were over Michael Jackson’s death. It seems everyone is mourning.

Why?

Because Michael was our youth. His voice will always remind us of our innocence. Even through his rape allegations, we all still admitted we loved his music. It trancended our prejudices & it even trancended Michael himself. His music, his image became a piece of us all. Michael Jackson is part of our self identity.

So today we mourn because we have lost something, not in him, but in ourselves. We have lost another piece of the innocence inside us. We have lost another bond we all share.

Not since John Lennon has someone touched us all. Not since John Lennon have we all had to mourn together over the loss. But hopefully like John Lennon, Michael’s music with trancended even his death.

So for all of us, particularly our brothers & sister in Iran, I dedicate the song “Heal The World”.
